We doubt it that there is still a person on the smoking Earth who doesn't know what is Cohiba, do you? Cohiba is a word that is already telling you the story, without having to go back to its roots. However, at least mentioning its rise in several words would show our deep respect towards this legendary brand.
The name cohiba comes from the Taino word meaning tobacco. As you probably know, Cohiba's history is wrapped in mystery, and a few people know how it appeared. There is a version that everything began in 1960's when one of Fidel Castro's bodyguards offered him a cigar of unknown origin, which was so good that Castro ordered to roll a small number of them for him and other superiors. The production of these cigars was under strict control, only few people had access to them.
A little later, Castro started offering these cigars to the attaches and ambassadors, as well as other officials who visited Cuba at that time.
The mass market learned its taste only in 1982, when Cuban officials decided to finally show it to the world. At its first public release, the brand consisted of three vitolas only, which were the Panetela, the Corona Especial, and the Lancero. Later on, in 1989, the brand has been added three more vitolas, such as the Robusto, the Exquisito, and the Esplendido. All of them are now known as the Linea Classica.
Several years later, Habanos launched a new line - the Siglo line, to commemorate Christopher Columbus and his travel to Americas.
Cohiba is still considered one of the most luxurious Cuban brands, being the most sought-after and highly valued among cigar connoisseurs.
