A brand with an almost two-century history, Hoyo de Monterrey has been established in 1865 by Jose Gener. The brand name means a valley of Monterrey which was a fertile plantation in the Vuelta Abajo region, owned by Gener at that time.
A little before this event, Jose Gener, who came to Cuba from Spain at the age of thirteen, has opened his own factory in Havana and began manufacturing his first brand La Escepcion. However, in 1865, using his factories revenues, he bought a plantation in the Vuelta Abajo region and created the new cigar line Hoyo de Monterrey.
The brand became extremely popular in the cigar world, especially, on the British market, making Gener's factory prosper. After his death in 1900, Gener's daughter, Lutgarda Gener took up the reins herself, and, thus, kept her father's business in the family run for another thirty years.
Anyway, the family sold their cigar brand to the company Fernandez, Palicio y Cia - in order to focus more on their sugar cane manufacture. The new owners added the Hoyo de Monterrey and the La Escepcion brand to their cigar line, which also included Punch and Belinda, and continued their release.
In 1940's the partners have introduced a new line, calling it Le Hoyo series, made specially for a Swiss distributor A Durr Co.
The Hoyo de Monterrey is known for such cigars like Epicure Especial, Epicure No. 1 and No. 2, Le Hoyo Des Dieux, Du Dauphin, Du Maire, Du Gourmet, as well as Palmas Extra, Petit Robusto, and many others, some of them being also available in packs of 3 and 5 cigars at My-Cuban-Cigars.com.
