The Por Larranaga brand began its existence in 1834, when it was established by Ignacio Larranaga. Apparently, the owner was the admirer of Rudyard Kipling's books, as the company bears the name mentioned in his 1890 poem (and also the neighborhood of Montevideo, Uruguay) saying "These's peace in a Larranaga, there's calm in Henry Clay".
The name turned out to be lucky for the Cuban company as it had become a famous premium cigar brand by the end of the 19th century. The brand was also the first to use machines to make its cigars which provoked a strike by factory workers. When the revolution broke out, Por Larranaga was the sixth largest brand in the Cuban cigar market.
The company had continued doing well after the Revolution, until trademark litigation limited its export to only a few countries in the 1990s. During this difficult period, the brand produced mainly hand-finished or machine-made cigars and was distributed only in the Middle East and Canada. Nowadays, the brand is enjoying a return to popularity with hand-made vitolas.
In 2006, Por Larranaga produced several thousand boxes of Lonsdales for Habanos S.A. which were later released in Germany. Some limited edition Por Larranaga cigars were also produced for the Pacific Asia, Latin America and Andes regions, as well as Switzerland.
Por Larranaga is probably the oldest continuously-produced Cuban cigar brand that still exists, and you have the chance to get a little closer to the Cuban tradition by trying Por Larranaga cigars at My-Cuban-Cigars.com.
