If you would like to meet one of the oldest Cuban cigar brands, then My-Cuban-Cigars.com is happy to help you make an acquaintance with the legendary H.Upmann brand.
The mild to medium brand's history goes back to the 1840's when Herman Upmann, who was a German banker, started using specially imprinted cigar boxes as gifts or promotional items for his bank. The idea proved to turn out a successful one, so the forward-looking banker continued selling cigars with a print on their boxes and even opened a factory in Havana, then called the H.Upmann factory, which is now the Jose Marti Factory. Thus, the H.Upmann brand was born.
The cigars became widely known and very popular among cigar aficionados even in the 1800's, the band has been medaled with seven gold medals, which still adorn the H.Upmann's cigar box as a reminder of its glory and quality.
However, every story has a back story. The famous brand has been sold to a British company J. Frankau & Co., since H.Upmann's bank and the cigar industry became bankrupt because of speculative activity with German marks and Mexican Oil possessions.
Anyway, whatever happens, happens for the best, and so was with the H.Upmann brand. Its current owners were also producing the Montecristo brand, so they continued to release H.Upmann under their name until the nationalization, or the Cuban Revolution.
Did you know that before signing the embargo, the then-US president John F. Kennedy ordered his secretary Pierre Salinger to provide him with all the boxes of H.Upmann Petit Coronas (his favorite cigars) he could find in Washington D.C?
